Escape The Ordinary
Get to know our founder
Q: Gilly, for those who haven’t discovered you yet, how would you describe what you do?
A: We create beautiful linen - bespoke, considered, and made to last a lifetime. Everything we do is rooted in the idea that your home should feel like you. Bed, table, and bath linen are the quietly luxurious details that tie an interior together, and we believe they deserve the same level of thought and craft as any great piece of furniture or art.
Q: Why are you so passionate about bespoke?
A: Because I genuinely believe that the most beautiful things in life are the ones made just for you. Our brand statement is ‘escape the ordinary’ for good reason - there’s something profoundly different about slipping into bed with linen that has been chosen in your colour, with your monogram, woven to your exact specification. It’s not about extravagance for its own sake - it’s about meaning. Bespoke is the antithesis of throwaway culture, and I find that deeply compelling.
Q: What do your clients love most about working with you?
A: The process, I think, as much as the product itself. Our clients, whether the actual property owner or the interior designer, are discerning and I think they like our ‘can do’ attitude. What we offer is a real conversation: What do you love? What does your space feel like? What do you want to wake up to every morning? Then we make it happen. Clients often tell us it’s one of the most enjoyable parts of a whole interior project.
Q: How would you describe the Gilly Nicolson aesthetic?
A: Timeless, never trend-led. We’re not interested in what’s fashionable this season - we’re interested in what will still feel utterly right in twenty years’ time because it’s been tailormade for each client. There’s an elegance to our work, but always with functionality at its heart. Great linen should be beautiful, easy to look after and a joy to live with, every single day.
Q: Walk us through what customisation actually looks like for a client.
A: It’s wonderfully indulgent! Clients choose everything - the cloth, the thread count, the weight, the colour, the trim, the embroidery. We can add monograms, family crests, even a signature colour that runs through an entire property. I like to describe it as a sweetie shop of options, designs and colours. That level of exclusivity is something our clients truly treasure.
Q: Who is the Gilly Nicolson client?
A: Someone who cares deeply about how they live. They might be a private individual creating their forever home, or a world-class interior designer specifying for a landmark project. What unites them is an eye for quality and a refusal to compromise. We also work with some of the most beautiful holiday homes, private yachts, and aircraft - anywhere that a discerning client expects an exceptional experience from the moment they arrive.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from?
A: Everywhere, honestly - but always through the lens of how people live. The rituals of a beautiful morning are deeply important to me. The way light falls across a perfectly dressed table. The quiet comfort of extraordinary bed linen at the end of a long day. I’m endlessly inspired by travel, and by the way different cultures approach the art of living well. To me, a home is an expression of a person, where they’ve been and the life they’re living.
Q: Tell us about your Scottish heritage - it feels important to the brand.
A: It’s absolutely central. Scotland has one of the greatest craft traditions in the world, and there’s a rigour and an integrity to that heritage that runs through everything we do. We blend those traditional techniques with a very modern, global sensibility — our clients are as likely to be in New York or the South of France as they are in London. But the commitment to uncompromising quality? That’s Scottish through and through.
Q: Your support for Women for Women International feels deeply personal. Can you tell us more?
A: It’s one of the things I’m most proud of. Women for Women International is a remarkable organisation - they work with women survivors of war, helping them rebuild their lives through skills, resources, and connection. For me, the link feels very natural. So much of what we do at Gilly Nicolson is about craft, about the skill of making, about the dignity of work done beautifully. Supporting women who are learning those same skills, in the most difficult of circumstances, feels like a true expression of what this brand stands for. Every purchase contributes to that mission, and I hope our clients feel that sense of shared purpose too.
Q: Finally - what do you want people to feel when they experience Gilly Nicolson linen?
A: Looked after. That’s really it. I want people to feel that someone thought carefully about every single thread - because we did. In a world that moves so fast, there’s something quietly radical about objects made with that level of care. That’s the feeling we’re always chasing.
