A Summer of Inspiration
Travelling is one of my favourite pursuits. I was brought up lucky enough to be taken on some incredible family holidays to exotic destinations like Tobago, Venezuela and The Philippines. My father always told me to look for inspiration overseas and I remember one holiday, as a teenager travelling through Arizona with them and sketching designs inspired by the Navajo Indians….designs which, at the tender age of 15, I dreamed of incorporating into a shop design one day!
This Summer, my husband and I had a few days in the beautiful French ski resort of Val D’Isere. Having visited many times during the Winter, I was immediately hooked on all the resort has to offer during the warmer months too. We were there for a big running race over the mountains – a long term dream of mine that didn’t disappoint. But it is absolutely one of my favourite places for interior inspiration too. We stayed in ‘Le Blizzard’, an exquisite hotel in traditional Savoie style, with cosy living spaces and a superb Clarins spa (especially post-run!). Cow hide unsurprisingly features heavily in chalet interiors but I loved the way it was used here to create zones in the bedroom and frame a small desk area.
Colours and textures inside the hotel were rich and heavy, with dark woods and dimmed lighting to complement the roaring fires. And outside, the pool and loungers had a distinctive French Riviera feel – I’ve spent many a happy afternoon on the sun terrace in ski boots, so the bikini was a real novelty!
The hotel is family-owned so to ensure that perfectly personal touch, the staircases were adorned with family portraits and photos of local skiing champions. I would not hesitate to recommend!
With two busy and active boys, our family holiday later on in July took us to Menorca, the smallest of the Balearic Islands. Having heard it’s quieter and more bohemian and laid back, it felt perfectly suited for all of us. And as untouched and rustic as a lot of it is, there’s a cool vibe in certain districts, with exceptional hotels and restaurants perhaps drawing influence from its bigger brother Majorca, but certainly still with real Menorcan charm. I fell in love with the block colours featured in the capital, Mahon – can’t walk past anything that’s not green!
The finale, to a wonderful Summer of fun, was a short break in Sweden to visit family. This is definitely a place I want to explore further and the interiors I discovered gave me a huge amount of inspiration for our own home. I adored the combination of historical buildings and interiors with bright colours – Stockholm is infamously full of beautifully painted buildings and it’s so, so pretty!
The interiors we saw in Gripsholm’s Castle and the family home we stayed in, really inspired me with our own home which is Edwardian and ‘arts & crafts’ in style (and a little ‘rustic’ around the edges). I get so frustrated with it sometimes looking ‘old-fashioned’ but these Swedish interiors were bright and colourful, and featured quirky pieces that really gave the properties tremendous charm and character.
A lot reminded me of Rose Uniacke’s distinctive style of using antiques and colourful fabrics in amongst a more simple, uncluttered room.
If only I could get rid of the clutter in my own house!
